the project is designed as a work in progress. “not from here” deals with the different aspects of intercultural perception and understanding. a german artist who lives in berlin and has never been in new zealand systematically tries to express as a painter and drawer his personal view on new zealand, its cultural heritage and contemporary practice, “from the outside”.
a view that is defined by his personal development, visual language and professional background, his european cultural identity and character. informations and imagery, stereotypes and impressions of new zealand transported by media and internet mix up with the personal and cultural imagery of the artist as well philosophical and historical reflections and notations. worldwide mickey mouse meets mana. quotations of contemporary poetry of new zealand cluster with linguistic reflections and theory of cognition and science of quine, popper, dürr or feyerabend. the artistic approach also reflects the ideas of the american artist robert smithson and his referential concept of “sight / non-sight” and “site / non-site”.
